Alghero DOC is located in northwestern Sardinia, Italy, in the province of Sassari. The appellation takes its name from the coastal town of Alghero, a historic port with a distinct Mediterranean character. The designation was formally established to protect wines produced in this specific territory, reflecting the region's viticultural identity.
The Alghero zone benefits from a Mediterranean climate moderated by proximity to the sea, with warm, dry summers and mild winters. The soils are largely calcareous and rocky, typical of coastal Sardinian terrain. While the appellation permits several grape varieties, production in this region has historically included both indigenous Sardinian varieties and international cultivars such as Cabernet Sauvignon, which thrives in the warm conditions and contributes to the area's red wine production.
Wines from Alghero DOC tend to reflect the warmth and intensity of the Mediterranean environment, with red wines showing ripe fruit character and moderate to good structure. The influence of the coastal location and limestone soils can impart a certain freshness and minerality that balances the natural ripeness of the grapes. These are wines that express the particular terroir of northwestern Sardinia rather than conforming to a single house style.
