Valencia

Valencia is a Denominación de Origen (DO) located in the autonomous community of Valencia on Spain's Mediterranean coast. The appellation encompasses vineyards in the provinces of Valencia, Alicante, and Cuenca, stretching from coastal plains to inland mountainous terrain. Established in 1957, it covers a substantial area of eastern Spain with diverse microclimates influenced by both Mediterranean and continental conditions.

The region's terroir varies significantly across its geography, from sandy coastal soils to clay-limestone compositions inland. The Mediterranean climate provides warm, dry summers and mild winters, with cooling influences from sea breezes in coastal areas and altitude in the mountainous zones. The DO permits a wide range of grape varieties including international varieties like Chardonnay alongside traditional Spanish grapes such as Monastrell, Garnacha, and Tempranillo. Both traditional and modern winemaking techniques are employed across the region's diverse production areas.

Valencia produces wines across the full spectrum of styles, from light whites to robust reds, with quality levels ranging from everyday drinking wines to more serious expressions. The appellation's size and geographical diversity mean that wine character varies considerably depending on specific location and grape variety. Coastal areas tend to produce fresher, more mineral-driven wines, while inland regions can yield more structured, concentrated expressions that reflect their terroir and elevation.
