Carricante is a white grape variety native to Sicily, grown primarily on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna in the northeastern part of the island. The variety has deep roots in Sicilian viticulture, though it remains relatively obscure outside its home region. Its cultivation is concentrated in the Etna DOC zone, where the distinctive volcanic terroir of black lava soils and high altitude vineyards create the conditions where Carricante expresses its characteristics most distinctly.
Wines made from Carricante tend toward a mineral, crisp profile with moderate body and bracing acidity. The grape typically produces white wines with citrus and green fruit aromas—lemon, lime, and sometimes herbal or floral notes—alongside a pronounced mineral quality that reflects the volcanic soils in which it grows. These are generally dry, food-friendly wines with good aging potential, particularly those produced at higher elevations where the cooler climate extends ripening and preserves acidity.
Carricante is essentially confined to Sicily, and specifically to the Etna region where it has become increasingly important as producers explore the potential of volcanic terroir wines. The variety pairs well with seafood, light pasta dishes, and Mediterranean cuisine. Its crisp acidity and mineral character make it suitable as an aperitif or alongside white fish and shellfish preparations.
