The 2014 Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru from Louis Latour has quite an exotic bouquet with strong tangerine and quince aromas, almost marmalade-like. The palate is rounded on the entry, quite vanilla-laced with generous new oak smoothing the candied finish. It just seems rather obvious and facile.
The 2011 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru from Louis Latour has a much more austere bouquet than the 2011 from Domaine du Pavillon, although it is well defined and should open with bottle age. Light resinous notes develop with aeration accompanied by dried white flowers, then returning after ten minutes, there are suggestions of volatile aromas. The palate is crisp and taut with a fine thread of acidity. This is very harmonious and poised with good depth and real grace on the spice-tinged finish that demonstrates commendable persistence.
The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru reflects all the sunshine of the growing season. Full-bodied, rich and glossy, with a sweet core of fruit and broad shoulders, its bouquet evokes peaches, buttery pastry, golden orchard fruit, baking spices and vanilla pod. This will appeal to readers who gravitate toward richer, more extrovert styles of white Burgundy.

The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours.
