Tapatio

Tapatio is a renowned tequila producer based in the Los Altos region of Jalisco, Mexico. The brand was founded in 1937 by Don Felipe Camarena, a third-generation tequila maker who wanted to create a tequila that would stand out from the rest. Today, Tapatio is still owned and operated by the Camarena family, with the same dedication to quality and tradition that has made it a beloved brand among tequila aficionados.

The Los Altos region, also known as the Highlands, is located in the eastern state of Jalisco and is considered one of the best areas for growing agave, the plant from which tequila is made. The region's high altitude, volcanic soil, and temperate climate provide the perfect conditions for agave cultivation, resulting in tequilas with a unique and complex flavor profile.

Tapatio tequilas are made from 100% blue Weber agave, which are handpicked and cooked in traditional brick ovens before being crushed to extract the juice. The juice is then fermented with a special yeast strain before being double-distilled in copper pot stills. This traditional method of production results in a smooth and flavorful tequila, with each expression showcasing the unique characteristics of the agave plant.

One of the most distinctive features of Tapatio tequilas is their aging process. The brand's Reposado and Añejo expressions are aged in ex-bourbon barrels for at least 8 months and 18 months respectively. This imparts a rich and woody flavor to the tequila, adding depth and complexity to the already delicious spirit.

Tapatio has also gained recognition for its limited edition expressions, such as the Excelencia Gran Reserva Extra Añejo. This ultra-premium tequila is aged for over 4 years in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry barrels, resulting in a smooth and complex tequila with notes of vanilla, caramel, and dried fruit.
