Ribeira Sacra is a Denominación de Origen (DO) located in Galicia, northwestern Spain, established in 1996. The appellation spans parts of the provinces of Lugo and Ourense, following the dramatic river canyons of the Miño and Sil rivers. The name "Ribeira Sacra" translates to "Sacred Shore," referencing the numerous monasteries and churches that dot this ancient winemaking landscape.
The region's distinctive terroir is defined by its steep, terraced vineyards carved into slate and granite hillsides that can reach gradients of up to 85 degrees. The Atlantic-influenced climate brings moderate temperatures and adequate rainfall, while the river valleys create beneficial microclimates. Permitted white grape varieties include Albariño, Godello, Treixadura, and Loureira, with Mencía dominating red wine production. The challenging topography necessitates hand-harvesting and limits mechanization, resulting in small-scale, artisanal production methods.
Ribeira Sacra wines are characterized by their mineral intensity and fresh acidity, reflecting the region's slate-dominant soils and cool climate conditions. White wines, particularly those from Godello and Albariño, typically display citrus and stone fruit flavors with pronounced minerality and crisp structure. The extreme vineyard sites and ancient winemaking traditions produce wines with distinctive personality that express the unique terroir of these river canyon vineyards.
