Abruzzo

Abruzzo is a mountainous region in central Italy, stretching from the Apennine Mountains to the Adriatic coast. The region's winemaking history dates back to ancient times, though it gained formal recognition for quality wine production more recently. Abruzzo sits between the Marche to the north and Molise to the south, with its diverse topography creating distinct microclimates from the high-altitude vineyards inland to the coastal plains.

The region's climate varies significantly from the continental conditions in the mountainous interior to the moderating maritime influence along the coast. The Apennine foothills provide well-draining soils and significant diurnal temperature variation, particularly beneficial for grape ripening. Key appellations include Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC, which covers much of the region, and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo DOC for white wines. The Colline Teramane DOCG represents the region's highest classification for Montepulciano-based wines.

Montepulciano dominates red wine production in Abruzzo, producing wines ranging from everyday drinking styles to more structured, age-worthy expressions. Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, made from Trebbiano Abruzzese (locally called Bombino Bianco), serves as the primary white grape variety, yielding fresh, mineral-driven wines. The region has modernized significantly since the 1990s, with many producers focusing on lower yields and improved winemaking techniques to elevate quality from its previous reputation for bulk wine production.
