Franschhoek is a wine-producing valley located in the Western Cape province of South Africa, approximately 75 kilometers northeast of Cape Town. The valley forms part of the broader Cape Winelands region and sits within the mountainous area of the Drakenstein municipality. Originally settled by French Huguenots in the late 17th century, the name translates to "French Corner" in Afrikaans, reflecting this historical connection that continues to influence the area's winemaking traditions.
The valley enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Franschhoek is surrounded by the Franschhoek, Groot Drakenstein, and Klein Drakenstein mountain ranges, creating a natural amphitheater that provides shelter from harsh winds while allowing for diverse microclimates across different vineyard sites.
