From vines situated in the upper part of Les Plures that is distinctly rockier and more like a Caillerets than a classically rich and generous Santenots). An elegant and admirably pure nose features notes of both red and dark pinot fruit, freshly turned earth and hints of anise and oak. The supple and delicious medium-bodied flavours retain good delineation and vibrancy while exhibiting solid length on the balanced finale. This needs to develop more depth to achieve the upper end of my projected range but the underlying material appears to be present for that to occur.

Catherine Buisson and Patrick Essa are winegrowers in Meursault, in Côte-d'Or. The couple run the Buisson-Charles estate, an eight-hectare estate, located in a short journey around Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, the golden triangle of the great white wines of the Côte de Beaune. The wines are organic and the vines plowed on horseback without using any weed killer. A small Burgundian-style estate that signs “haute couture” cuvées from plots located on exceptional terroirs.

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. Aligoté is the second white grape, accounting for 6% grown. {Read more about the ancient Aligoté grape in Burgundy.}

The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.

Volnay is a small wine appellation located in the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy, France. The history of winemaking in Volnay dates back to the Roman era, and the area has been producing high-quality wines for centuries.

The style of production in Volnay is traditional, with a focus on producing elegant and refined wines that showcase the unique terroir of the region. The vineyards in Volnay are planted on steep slopes, which allows for excellent drainage and optimal sun exposure. The soils in Volnay are primarily composed of limestone and clay, which impart a distinct minerality to the wines.

The primary grape variety grown in Volnay is Pinot Noir, which is known for its delicate aromas and flavors of red fruit, earth, and spice. The wines produced in Volnay are typically light to medium-bodied, with a silky texture and a long, complex finish. The tannins in Volnay wines are typically soft and supple, which allows the fruit flavors to shine through.

One of the most famous wines produced in Volnay is the Premier Cru Les Caillerets, which is known for its intense aromas of red fruit, violets, and spice. This wine is aged in oak barrels for up to 18 months, which adds a subtle hint of vanilla and toast to the wine. Another notable wine from Volnay is the Premier Cru Clos des Chênes, which is known for its rich, full-bodied style and complex aromas of black fruit, earth, and spice.

Overall, Volnay is a region that produces some of the finest Pinot Noir wines in the world. The combination of the unique terroir, traditional winemaking techniques, and the skill of the winemakers in the region results in wines that are elegant, complex, and truly exceptional. Whether you are a seasoned wine connoisseur or a casual wine drinker, a bottle of Volnay is sure to impress.
