Tasting notes

The Amarone della Valpolicella Campo dei Gigli 2018 is remarkably pretty, but also dark and intense. It emerges from the glass with dusty notes of dried roses, balsamic spices, tobacco, dark chocolate and dried black cherries. Seamless and elegant, it envelops the palate with ripe red and blue fruits that take on a bitter hint of mocha and espresso towards the end. The finish is long and spotty, with a layer of fine-grained tannins that give a classic dry impression, while minty herbal notes maintain freshness.

About this wine

Sant'Antonio's Campo dei Gigli is an Amarone della Valpolicella from the Veneto, made from partially dried Valpolicella grapes in the traditional appasimento method that concentrates sugar and flavour before fermentation. The result is a red of real weight and intensity, distinct from lighter Valpolicella wines from the same hills.

Expect dried fruit, chocolate and a warming, almost raisined richness balanced by firm tannin. It has the power to match beef, venison, duck and mushroom or truffle dishes, and enough grip to stand up to blue and aged cheeses at the end of a meal.
