A blend of Sangioveto (Sangiovese), Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 Maremma Toscana Le Sughere di Frassinello is a mid-range Tuscan red that opens to generous fruit and pleasant softness. This vintage shows a touch of ripeness with dried cherry skin and prune, but the results are well-balanced overall, especially if you are looking for a near-term pairing option for pasta or meat on the grill. This wine finishes on an elegant note with some freshness and nicely delineated structure.

Italy's most ancient wine region, Tuscany may not be a heavyweight in terms of quantity, but as the home of two of the country's most famous fine wines – Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino – it certainly holds its own in terms of quality. Tuscany's climate ranges from Mediterranean on the coast to continental deep in the Apennines. More than two thirds of the province is covered with hills, an important terroir factor in its fine wines.
