Tasting notes

Poggio ai Merli is a single-varietal Merlot that relies entirely on the terroir of central Tuscany and consistently embodies the Castellare style. It presents an intense, rich garnet colour. On the nose, delicate aromas of ripe blackberry emerge, accompanied by hints of mint, a touch of oak, and a subtle varnish note. On the palate, it delivers a powerful and gripping structure, with well-integrated oak enhancing the overall experience. The wine is rich and slightly saline, still youthful, and would benefit from further ageing in the bottle.

About this wine

Castellare di Castellina's Poggio Ai Merli is a compelling Toscana IGT Merlot that showcases the versatility of this noble grape when cultivated in Tuscany's renowned terroir. The estate, nestled in the heart of Chianti's rolling hills, brings meticulous winemaking traditions to this distinctive single-vineyard expression, emphasizing the wine's natural structure and complexity.

This Merlot displays the characteristic power and grippy tannin structure that defines quality expressions from the region. With black fruit concentration and a saline minerality, it reflects both the grape's inherent character and the soil's influence. At 14% ABV, it achieves remarkable balance, making it equally at home at fine dining tables or paired with casual gatherings.

Exceptionally food-friendly, this wine pairs beautifully with lamb, beef, and game, while its tannin profile complements aged cheeses, mushroom-based dishes, and grilled vegetables. It's equally suited to charcuterie boards and tomato-forward Italian cuisine, making it an essential addition to any well-appointed wine collection.
