Enquire about availabilityThe 2014 Smith-Haut-Lafitte has a fragrant mulberry and strawberry scented bouquet with cedar and subtle undergrowth scents emerging with time. There is something almost Musigny-like here (written as a complement incidentally, why not be compared to the greatest Burgundy Grand Cru?). The palate is medium-bodied with a soft and mellow opening. Quite spicy in the mouth with leather-tinged fruit on the open and inviting finish, there is something very approachable about this Smith-Haut-Lafitte, though like the 2014 Pape-Clement, it contains the substance to drink well over 10-15 years.
Château Smith Haut Lafitte - Pessac-Léognan
Château Smith Haut Lafitte makes this red in Pessac-Léognan, the appellation in the northern Graves on Bordeaux's left bank. It is a classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
The nose leads with mulberry and strawberry, then cedar and a little undergrowth as it opens with time. The palate is medium-bodied, with a soft, mellow entry, a spicy note and fruit edged with leather. The finish is open and inviting. It is approachable, but carries enough substance to reward patience.
Each grape has a clear job. Cabernet Sauvignon gives frame, Cabernet Franc adds lift and perfume, and Merlot brings roundness. Pessac-Léognan's gravelly soils typically add finesse and an earthy, savoury edge rather than sheer weight.
Decant before serving to let it open. It suits roast lamb, duck breast or a board of hard cheeses.
