The appellation spans parts of the provinces of Lugo and Ourense, following the dramatic river canyons of the Miño and Sil rivers. The name "Ribeira Sacra" translates to "Sacred Shore," referencing the numerous monasteries and churches that dot this ancient winemaking landscape.

The region's distinctive terroir is defined by its steep, terraced vineyards carved into slate and granite hillsides that can reach gradients of up to 85 degrees.
