This is a fun, easy-drinking red with a steady following. The Marchesi Antinori 2020 Chianti Classico Pèppoli marks the beginning of a new chapter for this popular bottle. Feeling that the wine had become too austere in recent years, the winemaking team opted for bigger oak barrels for less invasive oak. Fruit is selected from across various villages in the appellation. A tiny element of Merlot in this Sangiovese-based wine adds softness. These are logical choices that follow recent vintage trends, and here you get ripe cherry, crème de cassis and lightly toasted spice. It's a classic package and a good value.
The Marchesi Antinori 2019 Chianti Classico Pèppoli shows bright fruit and dried cherry with some nutty tones of toasted hazelnut at the back. This is a famously simple and streamlined wine with mid-weight appeal and good acidity. It is the proverbial Italian pasta wine, whether it be a carbonara or amatriciana. The wine ages in a combination of large Slavonian oak, barrique and stainless steel vat.
I admit to having consumed a couple of bottles of the 2014 Chianti Classico Pèppoli after work during my two-week stay in Tuscany. This is one of those "why not?" no-brainer Tuscan reds that pairs with basically everything you see on the menu and does a great job of keeping your palate refreshed. If you need a wine that will not be the protagonist against the food you eat, this is your bottle. The 2014 vintage is full of wild berry, pressed rose and light herbal back notes.
The Pèppoli vineyards produce a Chianti Classico that is a blend made from Sangiovese grapes and complementary varieties; Peppoli is recognized and appreciated for the full expression of its fruit. A wine that represents the Chianti Classico territory and its historic grape variety with typical floral and fruity aromas.
