The 2014 Barbaresco Costa Russi is a beautiful wine that delivers profound colour saturation with deep ruby highlights and blackish intensity. I would describe the nose as being more horizontal rather than vertical if that makes sense. In other words, the bouquet makes its approach with wide intensity and large-scale aromas of black fruit, spice, tar, leather, and liquorice. It offers fewer of the sudden high notes or moments of sharpness that you get in 2013. Despite the common perception that this was a very cool vintage, the fruit here actually tastes riper and rounder than you might expect. That's because the vintage heat all came toward the end of the growing season, and the Gaja family left fruit on the vines to the end. In the mouth, the wine shows depth and finesse with some stubborn firmness at this young stage. It needs to flesh out further with more bottle ageing.
The word Costa indicates the side of a hill, while Russi was the nickname of the sharecropper who worked in the vineyard. Costa Russi has a particularly fascinating and intriguing bouquet. Elegant and smooth from its early age, it is a full-bodied wine, with a great tannin structure and length and high ageing potential. "The 2013 Barbaresco Costa Russi is a celebration of vineyard site. In the past, this wine was blended with 5% Barbera, but this is no longer the case starting now. For the first time in recent memory, we are tasting a pure expression of Nebbiolo as harvested from the rows of vines in the Costa Russi cru, located directly below Sorì Tildìn at the base of the Barbaresco village. The vines are over 65-years-old and are planted in limestone clay and marl soils. Costa Russi is known for delicate, light-bodied wines that exhibit floral aromas of rose hip and lavender, as well as darker fruit tones at the back. Those qualities are beautifully evident in this vintage. The mouthfeel is characterised by a firm sense of tannic structure that is common to all of Gaja's new releases in the 2013 vintage." - Monica Lancer

The 2007 Langhe Costa Russi combines richness and focus to a degree that has seldom been seen here. This insanely beautiful wine boasts a breathtaking bouquet, explosive, generous fruit and an absolutely eternal finish. Layers of dark red fruit, minerals, flowers and spices saturate every corner of the palate as this mind-blowing Costa Russi struts its stuff. This is a towering effort from Angelo Gaja. The wine should be accessible fairly early and age for decades. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2037.

La famiglia Gaja si stabilì in Piemonte a metà del XVII secolo. Cinque generazioni di Gaja producono vini nelle colline delle Langhe dal 1989, anno in cui Giovanni Gaja, un viticoltore locale, fondò la cantina Gaja a Barbaresco.

Dopo anni di dedizione alla qualità senza compromessi, i vini hanno raggiunto una posizione di leadership in Italia e la famiglia è stata in grado di acquistare vigneti acquisendo Sorì Tildìn, Costa Russi, Sorì San Lorenzo e Darmagi.

Angelo Gaja rilevò l'azienda di famiglia nel 1961 e combinò il rispetto per le tradizioni delle Langhe con audaci innovazioni nei vigneti e nelle cantine che cambiarono il modo in cui i vini venivano prodotti in tutta Italia.

Angelo vive a Barbaresco con la moglie Lucia e i tre figli, Gaia, Rossana e Giovanni, che rappresentano la quinta generazione della famiglia e sono tutti coinvolti nell'attività.

Oggi l'azienda possiede 96 ettari di vigneti a Barbaresco e Barolo. Nel 1994, i Gaja hanno acquistato la loro prima proprietà in Toscana, Pieve Santa Restituta a Montalcino. Nel 1996 la famiglia ha acquistato la seconda proprietà in Toscana, Ca' Marcanda a Bogheri.
