Fonseca

Fonseca is a Port producer based in the Douro region of Portugal, one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions. The house specializes in Port wines, the fortified wines that have defined Portuguese viticulture since the 17th century. Fonseca's operations center on the production and aging of these fortified wines, drawing from vineyards and reserves in the Douro Valley.

The Douro region is characterized by steep, terraced vineyards carved into schist slopes, where hot, dry summers and cold winters create conditions ideal for cultivating the Portuguese red grape varieties that form the backbone of Port production. Port itself is defined by its fortification process—adding brandy to halt fermentation—which preserves residual sugar and creates wines of weight, complexity, and aging potential. These wines range from younger, fruit-forward styles to aged Tawnies and Vintage Ports that develop layered flavors over decades.

Fonseca's current collection includes Vintage Port, a style that captures the character of a single declared vintage. Vintage Ports are made only in exceptional years and represent the most age-worthy expression of the house's fruit selection and winemaking philosophy, typically spending two years in barrel before bottling for decades of further development in glass.
