The Tenuta di Biserno 2018 Lodovico shows a high degree of focus and sharpness in this vintage that was not always easy given some extra rain showers. This full-bodied Tuscan red is vertical and very intense while maintaining a careful sense of balance and aromatic equilibrium all the while. It shows big, black intensity with lots of fruit thickness and layering. The wine strikes at that proverbial and elusive crossroads between power and elegance. The blend sees mostly Cabernet Franc, with smaller parts Merlot and Petit Verdot. It is fermented in cone-shaped steel vats for up to four weeks. It completes malolactic fermentation in barrel (or 80% of the total does, with the remaining 20% in steel) and ages in barrique (with 80% new oak) for 16 months. Including 750-milliliter bottles and magnums, annual production is from 8,000 to 10,000 bottles.
This is the flagship wine from Tenuta di Biserno. It represents a special selection of grapes from within the estate's Bellaria vineyard that is planted to the same Bordeaux varieties used to make the Biserno. The 2016 Lodovico is an exceptional expression with enormous depth and a contemporary taste profile that weighs concentration and power against the careful precision of the varieties used in the blend. The results are sharp and focused, allowing for detailed renditions of blackberry and plum followed by elegance, spice, toast and chocolate. The tannins are sweet and carefully integrated within the rich fiber of the wine. Tenuta di Biserno has found its stride.
The 2013 Lodovico performs differently than you might expect, especially considering the knock-out performance of its cousin, Biserno from the same vintage. There was some discussion among my tasting group, which included Lodovico Antinori (directly at the estate), about the integrity of our samples, but it was not followed through with conviction. We concluded that the wine was simply in a closed phase when tasted. Indeed, this vintage offers a distinctive note of crushed granite and pencil shaving that you do not get in the others. This edition is almost salty in flavour compared to those. All said and done, I believe the 2013 vintage is enjoying a slower development, and we simply need to give it time. The tannins are dry but serve as ample glue to piece together the wine's many moving parts. It needs time to settle and flesh out.
This is the headline wine from Lodovico Antinori's Tenuta di Biserno. The hot vintage 2017 Lodovico shows a rich and deeply saturated colour with elegant tones of dark fruit, spice, rum cake, dried plum, jerky, charred meat and cured tobacco. Like the Biserno (which is also a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot), this special vineyard selection reveals slightly less depth and dimension in terms of mouthfeel. That more compact palate is a common feature of the 2017 vintage in which hard work and severe fruit selection was achieved in order to counter the jammy concentration of the berries. This remains a big wine, however, with the balanced and bright acidity that is a crucial indicator of the wine's undeniable quality and pedigree.

Toscana IGT is a wine appellation located in the central region of Italy, known for producing some of the finest wines in the world. The history of winemaking in Toscana dates back to the Etruscan era, and the region has been producing wine for over 3,000 years. The appellation is home to some of the most famous wine regions in Italy, including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

The style of production in Toscana IGT is heavily influenced by the region's climate and soil. The appellation is characterized by a Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters.
