Tasting notes
The Gaja 2017 Barbaresco Costa Russi offers a warmer and softer character compared to Sorì San Lorenzo and Sorì Tildìn. Overall, the wine is richer and more textured. There is definitely a taste of the vintage heat with its slightly sweeter and more accessible tones of cherry, cassis and fragrant blue flower. Costa Russi is usually defined by lifted notes of aniseed and sambuco, and you get those here too, although they are less pronounced in this vintage. This is a balanced and carefully assembled Barbaresco with a lean approach backed by fine tannins and bright acidity.

About this wine
Gaja is a renowned Italian wine producer that has been making exceptional wines for over 150 years. The Costa Russi is one of their most sought-after wines, and it is made in the Barbaresco region of Piedmont.
The Barbaresco region is known for producing some of the finest wines in Italy, and the Costa Russi is no exception. This wine is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, which are grown in the vineyards surrounding the village of Barbaresco. The grapes are carefully selected and hand-harvested to ensure only the best fruit is used in the wine.
The production of the Costa Russi is a labor-intensive process that involves a long maceration period and aging in oak barrels. The wine is aged for 12 months in barriques, followed by 12 months in large oak casks. This extended aging process gives the wine its complex and elegant character.
The Costa Russi is a full-bodied wine with a deep ruby color and aromas of black cherry, licorice, and tobacco. On the palate, the wine is rich and velvety, with flavors of dark fruit, spice, and a hint of vanilla. The tannins are firm but well-integrated, giving the wine a long and satisfying finish.
Overall, the Costa Russi is a wine of exceptional quality and complexity. It is a testament to the skill and dedication of the Gaja family, who have been producing some of Italy's finest wines for generations.
If you're looking for a truly special wine experience, the Costa Russi is an excellent choice. With its complex flavors and long finish, it is sure to be a hit at any gathering.
