Tasting notes
The organic G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Bricco delle Viole first shows a fragile side, but it eventually rolls onto much greater momentum and focuses as it opens in the glass. This is always one of my favourite wines from this excellent producer, and I love it, especially thanks to its fine nuances of redcurrant, pressed flower and something a little savoury like peat moss. There is a hint of ashy stone or brimstone. All of these little details emerge with terrific sharpness in an epic vintage such as 2021. Fruit comes from a seven-hectare plot at 400 to 480 meters in elevation on Sant'Agata marl soils with marine fossils.

About this wine
G.D. Vajra Albe produces benchmark expressions of Barolo DOCG from their estate in Piedmont, Italy's most prestigious wine region. The producer is celebrated for a biodynamic approach that emphasizes vineyard health and natural winemaking practices, resulting in wines of remarkable elegance and authenticity.
This Nebbiolo-based red from the Bricco delle Viole vineyard embodies the classic character of Barolo: full-bodied with warming alcohol, vibrant red fruit aromatics, delicate floral notes, and a distinctive stony minerality that reflects the region's Alba terroir. The wine's structure and complexity make it equally suited to cellar aging or near-term enjoyment.
A versatile pairing partner, this Barolo complements aged cheddar and blue cheese, grilled lamb and beef, mushroom-based dishes, venison, duck, and charcuterie. It's equally at home with tomato-based preparations and roasted vegetables, making it an essential addition to any fine wine collection.
