Pouilly-Fumé is an appellation d'origine contrôlée located in the Loire Valley of France, situated on the right bank of the Loire River directly across from Sancerre. The appellation encompasses seven communes in the Nièvre department, with the town of Pouilly-sur-Loire serving as its center. The AOC status was granted in 1937, establishing specific boundaries and production requirements for this relatively small wine region.
The vineyards of Pouilly-Fumé are planted exclusively with Sauvignon Blanc, which thrives in the region's continental climate moderated by the Loire River. The soils vary across the appellation, ranging from limestone and marl on the slopes to flint-rich clay soils known locally as "terres blanches" and "silex." These flinty soils are particularly prized for their contribution to the wine's mineral character. The appellation's name itself references this smoky, gunflint quality that the soils can impart to the wines.
Pouilly-Fumé wines typically display a distinctive mineral backbone with citrus and herbaceous notes characteristic of Sauvignon Blanc, but with greater complexity and aging potential than many expressions of the grape. The flinty soils contribute a subtle smoky or mineral edge that distinguishes these wines from their Sancerre neighbors across the river. The wines generally show crisp acidity with flavors ranging from gooseberry and grapefruit to more tropical notes, often developing honeyed complexity with age.
