Taurasi DOCG

Taurasi DOCG

Taurasi DOCG is located in the Campania region of southern Italy, situated in the hills northeast of Naples in the province of Avellino. The appellation was granted DOCG status in 1993, making it one of Italy's most prestigious wine designations. The vineyards are planted at elevations between 400 and 700 meters in the Apennine foothills, where the continental climate and volcanic soils create ideal conditions for viticulture.

The denomination requires wines to be made entirely from Aglianico grapes, with mandatory aging periods that include at least three years total aging, with a minimum of one year in wood for regular Taurasi and 18 months for Riserva bottlings. The volcanic and clay-limestone soils, combined with significant diurnal temperature variation at altitude, allow for extended growing seasons that help Aglianico achieve full phenolic maturity while retaining natural acidity.

Taurasi wines are characterized by their deep ruby to garnet color and complex aromatic profiles featuring dark fruit, leather, tobacco, and mineral notes. These wines possess substantial tannins and high acidity that require extended cellaring to fully integrate, often developing tertiary aromas of dried herbs, earth, and spice with age. The combination of Aglianico's inherent structure and the appellation's terroir produces wines capable of aging for decades, earning Taurasi recognition as one of southern Italy's most age-worthy red wines.
