Tasting notes

The 2011 La Poja is a pure expression of Corvina Veronese, one of the break-out indigenous grapes that is getting much deserved attention in Northern Italy today. Corvina stands on its own two feet as a monovarietal wine thanks to its color intensity and soft structure. However, this expression bears the signs of the warm vintage with slightly evolved or oxidized notes of cured meat and exotic spice. There is very little primary fruit left and a sour note appears on the close. I have reduced the drinking window as a result. It is aged in new Allier barrique for 20 months. The wine is almost too much of a good thing and much of the complexity and depth is lost given its overwhelming power.

About this wine

Allegrini is a renowned Italian wine producer that has been in operation for over four centuries. The company is based in the Veneto region of Italy, where it has been producing some of the finest wines in the country. One of the most popular wines from Allegrini is La Poja, which is a single-vineyard wine made from Corvina grapes.

La Poja is a unique wine that is produced using a traditional method known as appassimento. This involves drying the grapes on straw mats for several months before they are pressed. The result is a wine that is rich, full-bodied, and complex, with a deep ruby color and intense aromas of black cherry, plum, and spice.

The grapes used to make La Poja are grown in a single vineyard that is located on a hillside in the Valpolicella Classico region. The vineyard is planted with Corvina grapes, which are known for their high acidity and tannins. The grapes are carefully selected and hand-harvested to ensure that only the best fruit is used in the wine.

Once the grapes are harvested, they are dried on straw mats for several months. This process concentrates the flavors and sugars in the grapes, resulting in a wine that is rich and full-bodied. After the grapes are pressed, the wine is aged in oak barrels for 18 months to further develop its complex flavors and aromas.

La Poja is a wine that is best enjoyed with food. It pairs well with rich, hearty dishes such as roasted meats, stews, and game. The wine is also a great match for aged cheeses and dark chocolate.

Overall, La Poja is a wine that is rich in history and tradition. It is a testament to the skill and dedication of the winemakers at Allegrini, who have been producing some of the finest wines in Italy for over four centuries. If you are looking for a wine that is full-bodied, complex, and rich in flavor, La Poja is definitely worth trying.
