Catarratto is a white grape native to Sicily, where it has been cultivated for centuries. It is the island's most widely planted white variety and remains deeply connected to Sicilian winemaking tradition. The grape thrives in Sicily's Mediterranean climate, and while it was historically used primarily for bulk production, modern winemakers have increasingly demonstrated its capacity to produce refined, age-worthy wines, particularly when grown in cooler volcanic regions.
The wines produced from Catarratto tend toward medium body with crisp acidity. The flavor profile typically includes citrus notes—lemon and grapefruit—alongside orchard fruits like green apple and sometimes stone fruits. Depending on the growing conditions and winemaking approach, the wines can display mineral qualities and subtle herbal undertones. In cooler vineyard sites, Catarratto develops more complexity and freshness; in warmer locations, it tends toward rounder, more fruit-forward expressions.
Catarratto is particularly significant in eastern Sicily, where it is a key component of white wines from the Etna region. The volcanic soils and higher elevations of Mount Etna's slopes are among the finest terroirs for this variety, producing wines with distinctive minerality and aging potential. These wines pair well with seafood, lighter pasta dishes, and Mediterranean vegetables, making them versatile accompaniments to Sicilian cuisine.
