Clare Valley

Clare Valley is a wine region located in South Australia, approximately 120 kilometers north of Adelaide. The valley stretches roughly 40 kilometers from north to south, following the Gilbert and Hutt Rivers. Commercial viticulture began in the region during the 1840s when European settlers recognized the area's potential for grape growing.

The Clare Valley experiences a continental climate with warm, dry summers and cool winters. Rainfall occurs primarily during the winter months, with summers remaining relatively dry. The region's soils vary considerably, ranging from red clay over limestone in some areas to sandy loams and slate in others. Riesling dominates plantings and has become the variety most closely associated with the region, though Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and other varieties are also cultivated.

Clare Valley Riesling displays distinctive characteristics that reflect the region's terroir. These wines typically exhibit intense citrus and lime flavors with pronounced acidity, often developing complex mineral notes and petrol-like aromas with age. The combination of warm days and cool nights during the growing season helps preserve acidity while allowing full flavor development, resulting in wines with excellent aging potential that can evolve for decades in bottle.
