Ice Cubes

Ice cubes are frozen water used as a temperature management tool in the service of wine and other beverages. In a wine context, they are most commonly used to chill white wines, rosés, and sparkling wines when an ice bucket is employed, or occasionally added directly to a glass of wine in warmer climates or more casual settings.

When added directly to wine, ice cubes will dilute the liquid as they melt, which lowers alcohol perception and softens acidity but also mutes aromatic complexity and alters the intended balance of the wine. For this reason, many wine professionals recommend chilling bottles in advance rather than relying on ice to adjust serving temperature at the glass. Ice buckets filled with a mixture of ice and water remain the standard method for rapid, controlled chilling without affecting the wine itself.

The quality and composition of the ice itself can matter: ice made from neutral, filtered water avoids introducing off-flavours, particularly relevant when ice is used in direct contact with the drink. A 2kg quantity of ice is a practical amount suited to chilling one or several bottles in a standard ice bucket for a sitting.
