The 2014 Ormes de Pez was backward and surly on the nose, touches of gravel and graphite, but the fruit felt a little suppressed now. The palate is medium bodied with grippy tannin. It felt a little pinched, but the finish shows vivacity and focus with graphite-infused black fruit. It just cuts away swiftly on the finish. This is one of the few 2014s that I felt did not match up to its showing in barrel, then again, it often does repay several years down in the cellar.
This is a soft, consumer-friendly style of wine from Ormes de Pez from the Cazes family, who have done so much for the village of Pauillac and their own wines, such as Lynch-Bages. They have turned out a luscious, dark ruby, purple wine with sweet cassis fruit, an uncomplicated, medium-bodied mouthfeel and very velvety tannin.
Owned by the well-known Cazes family of Lynch-Bages, this popular St-Éstephe has turned out a dark ruby, plum-coloured 2011 with sweet cassis and black cherry fruit. A slightly short finish is present, but the wine has a good front end-loaded combination of fruit, extract, and succulence. It’s medium-bodied and tails off in the mouth, but it is well-made.
Deep garnet coloured, the 2010 Ormes de Pez slips sensuously from the glass with seductive blackberry pie, Black Forest cake and kirsch scents plus nuances of candied violets, hoisin, dark chocolate, and liquorice. Full-bodied, rich, and plush in the mouth, it has a fantastic line of freshness lifting all the decadent fruit to a long, energy-sparked finish.
The medium to deep garnet coloured 2009 Ormes de Pez gives up meaty notes of chargrill and rosemary-roasted lamb over a core of warm cassis and baked plums plus a waft of fried herbs. Medium-bodied, it has a firm, chewy frame and bold freshness supporting the savoury layers, finishing with an herbal lift.
The 2005 Ormes de Pez is medium-bodied, soft, round, not terribly concentrated, but spicy and earthy, with light tannin. Drink it over the next decade.
Fully mature, this nice chunky, fleshy wine displays notes of jus de viande, roasted herbs, plum sauce, black currants, and sweet cherries in a medium-bodied, savoury, fruit-forward style. It will drink well.
A successful effort, as well as a reasonably good value, this dark ruby with purple reflections, the 1998 exhibits copious quantities of cassis fruit along with earthy, underbrush notes. Medium to full-bodied, with fine concentration, excellent texture, and a soft, spicy, peppery finish, it will drink well.
The 1996 Ormes de Pez seems to have mellowed since the last time that I tasted it: mulberry and a touch of dried fig, a touch of allspice coming through with time. The palate is fully mature with fine tannin, quite saline and almost brine-like, tapering in slightly towards the finish. It is a little "serious" like some 1996s tend to be, a touch of Sichuan pepper on the finish.
