Argentinien

Argentina ranks as the world's fifth-largest wine producer, with viticulture concentrated primarily in the western provinces along the Andes Mountains. Mendoza province dominates production, accounting for roughly two-thirds of the country's vineyard area, while emerging regions like Patagonia's Rio Negro valley offer cooler climate alternatives. The wine industry transformed dramatically from the 1990s onward, shifting focus from bulk production to premium exports, establishing Argentina as a significant player in international markets.

The high-altitude vineyards, many situated between 2,000 and 4,000 feet above sea level, benefit from intense sunlight, significant diurnal temperature variation, and well-draining alluvial soils. Mendoza's sub-regions, including Luján de Cuyo, Uco Valley, and Agrelo, each offer distinct microclimates and soil compositions. Malbec, originally from France's Cahors region, found exceptional expression in Argentina's terroir and became the country's flagship variety. Other important red varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Bonarda, while white wine production centers on Torrontés, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.

Argentine Malbec typically displays deep color, ripe fruit character, and softer tannins compared to its French counterparts, reflecting the warmer climate and abundant sunshine. The combination of high altitude and latitude creates wines with concentrated flavors while maintaining good acidity. Premium producers increasingly focus on single-vineyard expressions and blends that highlight specific terroir characteristics, while the country's spirits industry includes traditional aguardiente production and modern craft distilling operations.
