The 2019 Faugères is a full-bodied, brutally extracted wine that exhibits a somewhat lactic nose of rich black fruits, berry liqueur and new oak. Mouthpuckeringly tannic, it lacks charm or generosity despite its heady levels of ripeness.
The 2016 Faugères is composed of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in 50% new and 50% one-year-old barrels for 15 months. Deep garnet-purple coloured, it features baked blueberries, stewed black plums and black cherry compote with hints of spearmint, cigar box and new leather. The palate is medium to full-bodied and laced with black fruit and savoury layers with a chewy frame, finishing long with a fragrant earth lift.
The 2015 Faugères is a blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 15 months in French oak, 50% new. Medium to deep garnet-purple in colour, it has a nose of baked plums, warm cherries, and black berries with touches of meat and fried spices. The full-bodied mouth is rich, opulent, and spicy with firm, velvety tannins and lovely freshness lifting the finish.
The 2014 Faugères still has bundles of red plum and juniper berry on the nose, if anything even more generous than when I tasted it a few months ago. The palate is medium bodied with fine tannin, superb structure and well judged acidity. It merges with more black fruit towards the finish and has palpable energy on the finish—still excellent.
The estate’s most abundant cuvee of about 5,000+ cases is the 2010 Faugères, a blend of 85% Merlot with the rest mostly Cabernet Franc and just a small quantity of Cabernet Sauvignon, all bottled unfined and unfiltered. Tiny yields of 22 hectolitres per hectare and a late harvest that went into the third week of October have resulted in a stunningly concentrated wine with notes of crushed rock, blue and dark red/black fruits, some camphor, incense and, for lack of a better description, a smell of acacia flowers. A sexy, opulent, and full-bodied wine that seems to have more in common with the 2009s than most 2010s, this wine can be drunk out of the gate, but will certainly hit its stride in 3-4 years and last for up to 15.

Château Faugères is a renowned wine producer located in the Saint-Émilion appellation of Bordeaux, France. The history of this estate dates back to the 1820s when it was first established by the Guisez family. Over the years, the estate has changed hands several times, with each owner contributing to its growth and success.

Today, Château Faugères is owned by the Corre-Macquin family, who have been dedicated to producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. The estate covers over 37 hectares of vineyards, which are planted with a variety of grape varieties, including Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The style of production at Château Faugères is focused on traditional winemaking techniques, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility. The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted before being fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for up to 18 months, depending on the vintage.

The wines produced by Château Faugères are known for their elegance, complexity, and balance. They are characterized by their deep ruby color, intense aromas of black fruit, and subtle notes of spice and vanilla. On the palate, the wines are full-bodied and rich, with firm tannins and a long, lingering finish.

Château Faugères produces a range of wines, including its flagship wine, Château Faugères Grand Cru Classé, which is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is aged in oak barrels for 14-18 months and is known for its rich, complex flavors and aromas.

In addition to its Grand Cru Classé, Château Faugères also produces a second wine, called Peyrou, which is made from younger vines and is aged for 12-14 months in oak barrels. This wine is more approachable and fruit-forward than the Grand Cru Classé, but still maintains the elegance and complexity that is characteristic of Château Faugères wines.

Overall, Château Faugères is a producer that is dedicated to producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Saint-Émilion appellation. With its focus on traditional winemaking techniques and commitment to sustainability, it is no wonder that Château Faugères is a highly sought-after producer among wine enthusiasts and collectors alike.
