Mendoza

Mendoza is Argentina's premier wine region, located in the foothills of the Andes Mountains in the country's western province. It accounts for the majority of Argentina's wine production and has established itself as one of South America's most significant wine-producing areas, particularly known for high-altitude viticulture that leverages the region's mountainous terrain.

The region's high altitude—vineyards typically sit between 2,500 and 5,000 feet—creates cool nights despite daytime warmth, allowing grapes to develop complex flavors while maintaining natural acidity. The Andes provide a natural barrier to Pacific moisture, resulting in a semi-arid climate with significant diurnal temperature variation. Key appellations within Mendoza include Luján de Cuyo, known for structured Malbecs; Tupungato, where elevation emphasizes freshness; Agrelo, a historic sub-region; and the broader Uco Valley, which encompasses high-altitude sites producing distinctive wines.

Mendoza is most celebrated for Malbec, a dark-skinned variety that thrives in the region's conditions and produces wines with deep color, plum and blackberry notes, and firm tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir also perform well in the cooler, higher-altitude sites. The region also produces white wines and sparkling wines from Chardonnay and other varieties. The combination of altitude, continental climate, and volcanic soils distinguishes Mendoza wines by their balance of ripeness and freshness—a characteristic that has made Argentine Malbec internationally recognized.
