Istria

Istria is a heart-shaped peninsula located in the northern Adriatic, shared between Croatia, Slovenia, and Italy. The Croatian portion, known as Istarska County, represents the country's most developed wine region and accounts for roughly half of Croatia's total wine production. The region's winemaking history dates back to Roman times, with viticulture deeply embedded in the peninsula's agricultural traditions.

The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate along the coast transitioning to continental influences inland, creating diverse microclimates across its rolling hills and river valleys. The terra rossa soils, characteristic red clay over limestone bedrock, provide excellent drainage and mineral complexity. Coastal areas experience moderating sea breezes, while inland vineyards sit at elevations between 200-400 meters, offering cooler temperatures and extended growing seasons.

Malvasia Istriana serves as the region's signature white grape variety, producing wines ranging from fresh and mineral-driven to more complex barrel-aged expressions. Other notable varieties include Muscat, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc among whites, and Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and the indigenous Refosco among reds. Croatian Istria has gained recognition for its modern winemaking techniques combined with respect for traditional varieties, producing wines that reflect both Mediterranean warmth and continental structure.
