Olivier Leflaive is a renowned wine producer based in the Burgundy region of France. The history of this winery dates back to the early 19th century when it was founded by Joseph Leflaive. However, it was not until the 1980s that the winery gained international recognition under the leadership of Olivier Leflaive, the great-grandson of Joseph Leflaive.

The winery is known for its exceptional white wines, particularly Chardonnay, which is the most widely planted grape variety in Burgundy. Olivier Leflaive produces a range of white wines, including Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, and Chassagne-Montrachet, which are all made from 100% Chardonnay grapes.

The style of production at Olivier Leflaive is focused on minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to express itself fully in the wines. The winery uses only natural yeasts and avoids the use of new oak barrels, preferring to age their wines in older barrels to avoid overpowering the delicate flavors of the Chardonnay grape.

In addition to their white wines, Olivier Leflaive also produces a range of red wines, including Pinot Noir and Gamay. These wines are made using the same philosophy of minimal intervention and terroir expression as their white wines.

Overall, Olivier Leflaive is a producer that is highly regarded in the wine world for their exceptional white wines and commitment to quality. Their wines are a true reflection of the Burgundy region and the unique terroir that makes it one of the most sought-after wine regions in the world.

The French Wine region of Burgundy (aka “Bourgogne”) may be small in size, but its influence is huge in the world of vino. The complexity of Burgundy can cast fear into the heart of even a seasoned wine pro, but fear not – the region need only be as complicated as you want it to be. Yes, it is home to some of the most expensive wines in the known universe, but there are also tasty and affordable wines.

Main grapes:

Pinot Noir originated in Burgundy and these vines cover 34% of the region, accounting for 29% of overall wine production. The red grape does extremely well in limestone and clay soil, which helps create their complexity. Pinot Noir wines from Burgundy range in colour from cherry to brick, are light in body, and typically have red fruit and spicy flavours. Gamay is a red grape also grown in Burgundy, but only makes up 10% of the vines.

Chardonnay is the primary grape for white wines in Burgundy, making up 48% of the vines and 68% of production. Chardonnay appreciates Burgundy’s marl soil, which gives it delicate floral, fruit, and mineral aromas and full-bodied flavours. Aligoté is the second white grape, accounting for 6% grown. {Read more about the ancient Aligoté grape in Burgundy.}

The region does produce a sparkling wine called Crémant de Bourgogne. It can be made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Aligoté, Gamay, Sacy, and Melon. Varieties include blanc, blanc de blancs, blanc de noirs, and rosé.

Puligny-Montrachet is a small wine appellation located in the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy, France. The history of winemaking in this area dates back to the Roman times, and the appellation has been producing some of the finest white wines in the world for centuries.

The style of production in Puligny-Montrachet is focused on producing high-quality, elegant white wines that are known for their complexity, depth, and finesse. The appellation is known for its Chardonnay grapes, which are grown on the slopes of the Côte de Beaune, where the soil is rich in limestone and clay.

The grapes grown in Puligny-Montrachet are carefully tended to by skilled winemakers who use traditional methods to produce wines that are true to the terroir of the region. The grapes are hand-harvested and sorted, and then gently pressed to extract the juice. The juice is then fermented in oak barrels, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation to soften the acidity and add complexity to the wine.

The typical wines from Puligny-Montrachet are elegant, complex, and full of character. They are known for their aromas of citrus, white flowers, and honey, and their flavors of ripe fruit, minerals, and oak. The wines are aged in oak barrels for up to 18 months, which gives them a rich, creamy texture and a long, lingering finish.

The most famous wines from Puligny-Montrachet are the Grand Cru wines, which are produced from the best vineyards in the appellation. These wines are known for their exceptional quality and are highly sought after by wine collectors and connoisseurs around the world.

In conclusion, Puligny-Montrachet is a small but highly respected wine appellation that produces some of the finest white wines in the world. The appellation's focus on quality, traditional winemaking methods, and the unique terroir of the region make it a must-visit destination for wine lovers and enthusiasts.
