Muso Rosso is a wine producer based in Puglia, southern Italy, specifically working within the Primitivo di Manduria DOC appellation. This region, located in the heart of Puglia's Salento peninsula, has gained recognition for producing powerful red wines from the Primitivo grape variety, which is genetically identical to California's Zinfandel.
The Primitivo di Manduria DOC, established in 1974, covers vineyards around the historic town of Manduria in the provinces of Taranto and Brindisi. The area's Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters, combined with calcareous and clay-rich soils, creates ideal conditions for ripening Primitivo grapes to high sugar levels. These environmental factors typically result in wines with intense color, robust tannins, and alcohol levels that often exceed 14%.
Muso Rosso's current offering focuses on Primitivo di Manduria DOC wines, working with what is locally called Primitivo but is essentially the same grape variety as Zinfandel. The producer's Tagaro bottling represents their interpretation of this traditional Puglian variety within the controlled designation of origin framework.
