Il Marroneto

Il Marroneto

The Il Marroneto story began in 1974 when the Mori family started to make Brunello for fun and for the love of the wine. In time this “playing with wine” became more serious and Allessandro Mori decided to expand the cellars and pursue his love of winemaking, adopting a traditional and minimalist approach, producing wines that are 100% Sangiovese.

Interview with Alessandro Mori, Owner

What has been your favourite moment since you took over Il Marroneto? I have some indelible memories of my childhood with all my family working together in the cellar till late night cleaning the bottles or slowly moving the wine from one barrel to the other. For me the desire to remain attached to my childhood encourages me to continue in traditional winemaking. That makes me successful today, in fact, as you know, today I am considered one of the eight “pure” traditional winemakers in the Sangiovese area.

What are the biggest challenges when making a Brunello di Montalcino? The challenge is not to make the Brunello di Montalcino. The challenge is to work the Sangiovese. Brunello di Montalcino is the king of the Sangiovese. Our area is perfect to make pure Sangiovese wine. Sangiovese vines have roots that feed close to the surface, resulting in a terroir strong grape. The challenge is to fix this terroir in the wine; to be able to fix all the elegance, the velvet and silt, smells and acidity, fruits and flowers, without the help of chemistry or mechanical intervention, as our grandfathers did for the last 3,000 years ago.

Do you have a favourite food and wine pairing with your Brunello? I love to drink a glass of good wine sperate from food. Playing cards with my friends, watching a movie, reading a book…. I can enjoy all the pleasures that come from the glass. I love to think that my wine can be perfect for these moments of intimacy.
