Domaine Georges Vernay

Domaine Georges Vernay

Domaine Georges Vernay is one of the foundational estates of Condrieu, the small northern Rhône appellation centred on the granite hillsides above the town of the same name, just south of Côte-Rôtie. Georges Vernay himself was instrumental in preserving Viognier as a viable commercial variety during the mid-twentieth century, when the grape had declined to near extinction in the region. The domaine is now run by his daughter Christine Vernay, who has continued to build on the estate's standing within the appellation.

Condrieu produces exclusively white wine from Viognier, a variety that expresses itself with particular intensity on these steep, decomposed granite terroirs. The wines are typically characterised by their aromatic richness — stone fruit, apricot, white flowers, and occasional notes of spice — balanced by a texture that ranges from full and round to more precise and mineral depending on the specific lieu-dit and vintage conditions. The appellation is one of the few places in the world where Viognier consistently reaches a high degree of complexity without losing structural definition.

The Viognier produced under the Condrieu appellation represents the core of what this domaine has long championed, and the vintage offerings reflect the character of a grape variety that is highly sensitive to site and season.
