Domaine Catherine & Pierre Breton

Catherine and Pierre Breton are a husband-and-wife domaine based in Bourgueil in the Loire Valley, though they also produce wine in Vouvray, working with Chenin Blanc on the tufa-rich soils of that appellation. They are among the Loire's well-known proponents of biodynamic viticulture, farming their vines without synthetic treatments and working with natural fermentation in the cellar.

Vouvray, located on the right bank of the Loire east of Tours, is planted almost exclusively with Chenin Blanc, a variety of exceptional versatility that can produce still wines ranging from bone-dry to richly sweet, as well as sparkling wines. The appellation's soils are defined by tuffeau, a soft chalky limestone that retains moisture, moderates vine stress, and is credited with giving Vouvray Chenin Blanc its characteristic tension and mineral edge. Wines from the region often show notes of quince, beeswax, and wet stone, with a naturally high acidity that allows them to age for many years.

The Pierres Rousses is one of the domaine's Vouvray offerings, the name referencing the reddish-brown iron-rich soils found in parts of the appellation that distinguish certain parcels from the more common white tuffeau. These site-specific differences in soil composition influence the texture and aromatic profile of the resulting Chenin Blanc, lending it a slightly broader, earthier character compared to wines grown on purer chalk.
