Damoiseau is a rum producer based in Guadeloupe, an island in the Lesser Antilles known for sugar cane cultivation and distillation. The distillery has been operating since the 19th century and remains one of the significant rum producers in the French Caribbean, where rhum agricole—made from fresh cane juice rather than molasses—is the traditional method of production.
Guadeloupe's rhum agricole reflects the island's terroir and climate, producing spirits with grassy, vegetal notes characteristic of the style. The region benefits from volcanic soils and consistent tropical conditions that influence the character of the cane and the fermentation process. Damoiseau's dark rum offerings, aged in wood, develop deeper flavors and greater complexity than their unaged counterparts, with the aging process mellowing the spirit's natural intensity.
The XO expression in the current range indicates a rum aged for at least six years, a standard that allows for significant wood interaction and flavor development. Dark rums from Guadeloupe typically show notes of caramel, spice, and dried fruit alongside the characteristic cane-derived qualities, making them suitable for sipping neat or in cocktails that benefit from a more robust spirit.
