The Isle of Raasay is a small Hebridean island located between the Isle of Skye and the Scottish mainland in the Inner Hebrides. This remote island became home to Scotland's first new whisky distillery in nearly a decade when the Raasay Distillery began operations in 2017. The island's isolation and unique geography contribute to a distinctive terroir for single malt whisky production, marking it as one of Scotland's newest whisky-producing regions.
The island experiences a maritime climate heavily influenced by the surrounding Atlantic waters and the nearby Cuillin mountains of Skye. Raasay's landscape combines peat bogs, mineral-rich water sources, and coastal exposure that creates specific environmental conditions for whisky maturation. The distillery utilizes both peated and unpeated barley, taking advantage of the island's natural peat deposits while also drawing from the pure water sources that flow across the island's varied geology.
The Isle of Raasay produces single malt whisky that reflects its maritime environment, with the coastal location influencing the maturation process through salt-laden air. The distillery employs a combination of traditional Scottish whisky-making techniques while incorporating some innovative approaches, including the use of Bordeaux red wine casks and rye whisky barrels for finishing. This creates a house style that balances island character with contemporary whisky craftsmanship.
