Margaret River

Margaret River is a wine region located in Western Australia, approximately 270 kilometers south of Perth. The region sits between the Indian Ocean to the west and the forests of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge to the east, creating a distinctive maritime-influenced terroir. Commercial winemaking began in the area during the late 1960s, making it one of Australia's younger premium wine regions.

The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate moderated by ocean breezes, with warm dry summers and mild wet winters. The soils are primarily gravelly loam over clay subsoils, with some areas containing laterite and granite-based compositions. Margaret River is particularly noted for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, though the region also produces quality Shiraz, Malbec, and other Bordeaux varieties. The maritime influence helps maintain good acidity levels in the grapes while allowing for full phenolic ripeness.

Margaret River wines typically display elegance and structure, with Cabernet Sauvignon-based reds showing cassis fruit character, herbaceous complexity, and firm tannins that age gracefully.
