Tasting notes
While the 2016 Sophia is an impressive blend of 58% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc and 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, in the context of the Craggy Range Prestige Collection, it has to be considered a weak link. Dried herbs frame black cherries on the nose, while the mid-palate of this medium to full-bodied wine lacks the rich degree of texture shown by the winery's other top bottling. The dark fruit flavours turn crisp on the finish, ending in a flurry of tart cherry and cranberry flavours.

About this wine
Craggy Range - Gimblett Gravels - Sophia
Craggy Range's Gimblett Gravels Sophia is a wine that is sure to impress even the most discerning of wine connoisseurs. This wine is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, and is aged in French oak barrels for 19 months.
The taste profile of this wine is complex and layered, with notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, as well as hints of vanilla, tobacco, and spice. The tannins are firm and well-structured, providing a long and satisfying finish.
The grapes for this wine are sourced from the Gimblett Gravels sub-region of Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, which is known for its unique soil composition and microclimate. Craggy Range is a family-owned winery that is committed to sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, and this wine is a testament to their dedication to quality and craftsmanship.
This wine is perfect for pairing with rich and hearty dishes, such as roasted lamb or beef, as well as strong cheeses. It is also a great wine to enjoy on its own, perhaps while taking in the stunning views of the Hawke's Bay region.
