Château Bellegarde

Château Bellegarde is a red wine producer based in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, France. Margaux sits on the left bank of the Gironde estuary in the Médoc, where the deep, well-drained gravel soils over clay subsoils are considered particularly well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends.

Margaux is one of the four communes granted their own communal appellation within the Médoc, covering around 1,500 hectares across five villages. The appellation is often associated with wines that combine structure with a notable aromatic finesse and silky texture — characteristics attributed in part to the fine gravel and sandy elements of its soils. These conditions encourage vines to root deeply, moderating the influence of both drought and excess moisture.

The estate works with the classic left-bank Bordeaux blend, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. This combination is standard across the Médoc, with Cabernet Sauvignon typically forming the backbone, Merlot contributing roundness, Cabernet Franc adding aromatic complexity, and Petit Verdot providing depth of colour and tannin. The 2021 vintage in Bordeaux was shaped by a challenging growing season with late frosts and variable summer conditions, generally favouring producers who managed yields carefully and harvested selectively.
