Maipo Valley sits in central Chile, approximately 50 kilometers south of Santiago, and stands as one of the country's most historically significant wine regions. The valley extends from the Andes Mountains in the east to the coastal ranges in the west, following the path of the Maipo River. This region gained recognition as Chile's first official wine appellation and remains the traditional heartland of Chilean viticulture, particularly known for producing some of the country's most acclaimed red wines.
The valley benefits from a Mediterranean climate with distinct wet winters and dry summers, while the Maipo River provides essential irrigation during the growing season. The terroir varies considerably across the valley's different zones, from the cooler, higher-altitude vineyards near the Andes foothills to the warmer central areas with alluvial soils. The Puente Alto and Pirque areas in the upper valley are particularly noted for their gravelly soils and cooler temperatures, while the lower valley toward the coast experiences maritime influences that moderate temperatures.
Cabernet Sauvignon dominates plantings in Maipo Valley and produces wines of exceptional depth and structure, often considered among Chile's finest expressions of this variety. Carmenère, Chile's signature grape, also thrives here and was historically mistaken for Merlot until DNA analysis in the 1990s revealed its true identity. The region additionally supports successful plantings of Merlot, Syrah, and increasingly Pinot Noir in cooler sites, with many producers focusing on premium, terroir-driven wines that reflect the diverse microclimates within this compact but varied valley.
