Dao

Dão is a historic wine region in central Portugal, located in the Serra da Estrela foothills south of the Douro valley. Established as a demarcated region in 1908, it occupies a mountainous plateau in the provinces of Beira Alta and Beira Baixa, roughly 400–600 metres above sea level. The region has long been known for producing balanced, age-worthy wines, though it remained relatively unknown internationally until recent decades when producers began modernizing winemaking practices while respecting the terroir.

The Dão climate is continental, with significant temperature variation between warm days and cool nights—a pattern that favors slow ripening and the development of acidity and complexity in wines. Granite and schist soils dominate the landscape, contributing mineral character and good drainage. The region's elevation and surrounding mountains create a natural barrier that protects vineyards from Atlantic humidity, resulting in cleaner fruit expression and lower disease pressure. These conditions have shaped Dão's identity as a producer of structured, food-friendly wines rather than heavy, fruit-forward styles.

Encruzado is the signature white grape of Dão, prized for its ability to produce mineral, complex wines with good acidity and aging potential. Red production, historically dominant, features blends built around Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz. In recent years, the region has gained recognition for the quality of its whites, which offer savoury, stone-fruit character with a distinctive grainy texture. Dão wines are typically dry and relatively restrained, reflecting the cool-climate, high-altitude terroir rather than ripe, extracted styles.
