Antinori is the most famous name in Italian wine and the influence of Piero Antinori in the last 25 years has been nothing short of revolutionary. Antinori's flagship wine, Tignanello, first appeared in 1971 and caused a sensation by its use of Cabernet Sauvignon in a Sangiovese blend and with its practice of ageing in small French barriques. Antinori was accused of vinous treachery and treason but soon barrique-aged blends of Sangiovese and Cabernet began appearing all across Tuscany.

Italy's most ancient wine region, Tuscany may not be a heavyweight in terms of quantity, but as the home of two of the country's most famous fine wines – Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino – it certainly holds its own in terms of quality. Tuscany's climate ranges from Mediterranean on the coast to continental deep in the Apennines. More than two thirds of the province is covered with hills, an important terroir factor in its fine wines.

Bolgheri DOC is located in Tuscany's coastal Maremma region, approximately 100 kilometers southwest of Florence near the Tyrrhenian Sea. The appellation was established in 1994, formalizing a zone that had already gained international recognition for producing Bordeaux-style blends in a Mediterranean setting. The DOC encompasses vineyards around the medieval village of Bolgheri and extends toward the coastal town of Castagneto Carducci.

The region benefits from a warm Mediterranean climate moderated by sea breezes, with well-draining soils that include clay, sand, and limestone deposits. Bolgheri DOC permits international grape varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot for red wines, alongside Sangiovese and other Italian varieties. White wines can be produced from Vermentino, Sauvignon Blanc, and other approved varieties. The appellation includes a Superiore designation for red wines meeting higher quality standards.

Bolgheri red wines typically display concentrated fruit character with structured tannins, combining the power of Bordeaux varieties with the warmth and intensity of the Tuscan coast. The maritime influence contributes freshness and complexity, while the Mediterranean sunshine ensures full ripeness. These wines often show dark berry fruits, herbs, and mineral notes, with the ability to age gracefully due to their balanced acidity and tannin structure.
