The 2019 Pontet-Canet presents an expressive bouquet of plummy fruit, kirsch, dried herbs, and peonies. On the palate, it is full-bodied, ample, and seamless, with melting tannins, succulent acidity, and a long, liqueured finish. Tasted twice, it is a wine that some may find somewhat perplexing. In a blind tasting, it might be more easily placed in Gigondas than Pauillac. While stylistic diversity undoubtedly enriches every appellation, there is some doubt whether this is the most compelling expression of a Cabernet-based blend from this part of Bordeaux. With an alcohol content of 13.7%, about 35% of the production was matured in amphorae, which likely contributes to the wine's idiosyncratic character.
Château Pontet-Canet is one of Pauillac's most respected fifth-growth estates, renowned for producing elegant, age-worthy red wines that capture the essence of Bordeaux's Left Bank terroir. Situated in the heart of the Médoc, the château benefits from exceptional gravelly soils and a maritime climate that perfectly ripens the classic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.
This Pauillac expresses the region's hallmark characteristics: structure, depth, and refinement. The blend delivers a full-bodied red wine with herbaceous notes and medium(+) acidity, showcasing the complexity that defines the appellation. The 14% ABV provides balance and elegance, making this wine both approachable and capable of extended cellaring.
Versatile at the table, this Pauillac pairs beautifully with lamb, beef, duck, and venison, as well as aged and blue cheeses. It also complements mushroom-based dishes, tomato-forward preparations, and Mediterranean tapas. Notably, this expression is Kosher certified, expanding its appeal without compromising the winemaking excellence that defines Château Pontet-Canet.
