Barros

Barros is a Port producer based in the Douro region of Portugal. The company specializes in fortified wines produced under the Port appellation, focusing on aged tawny and colheita styles that represent the traditional methods of Port production.

Port production in the Douro involves fortifying wine with grape spirit during fermentation, then aging the resulting fortified wine in wooden casks. This process concentrates flavors and develops the characteristic oxidative qualities that distinguish Port from unfortified wines. Tawny Ports, in particular, derive their name and pale amber color from extended barrel aging, during which they gradually oxidize and develop nutty, dried fruit, and caramel notes. Colheita Ports are single-vintage tawnies aged for a minimum period before release, offering the complexity of aged Port with vintage specificity.

The current Barros range includes a 40-year Tawny Port, representing an extended aging period that would have developed considerable depth and concentration, alongside a 1983 Colheita. Both are produced from Portuguese red grape blends traditional to Port production. These styles reflect the producer's focus on aged fortified wines rather than younger vintage or ruby expressions.
