Greco

Greco is an ancient white grape variety with deep roots in southern Italy, particularly flourishing in the volcanic soils of Campania. Archaeological evidence suggests Greek settlers introduced this variety to the region over two millennia ago, though some ampelographers believe it may have indigenous Italian origins. The grape thrives in the warm Mediterranean climate of southern Italy, where it benefits from significant diurnal temperature variation and mineral-rich volcanic terroir.

Greco produces wines with distinctive mineral intensity and notable acidity. The variety typically exhibits aromas of citrus zest, white flowers, and stone fruits, often complemented by characteristic volcanic mineral notes. These wines tend to be medium-bodied with a crisp, clean finish and can develop complex honeyed and nutty characteristics with age. The grape's natural acidity provides excellent structure for both immediate consumption and cellaring.

Campania represents Greco's most significant stronghold, where it achieves DOCG status in Greco di Tufo, one of Italy's most respected white wine appellations. The variety pairs exceptionally well with seafood, particularly shellfish and crustaceans, as well as fresh mozzarella and other southern Italian cheeses. Its mineral profile and bright acidity also complement vegetable-based dishes and lighter pasta preparations common in Campanian cuisine.
