Godello is a white grape variety native to northwestern Spain, primarily established in Galicia. The variety has deep roots in the region, though it nearly disappeared during the mid-20th century before being revived by dedicated producers. It thrives in the Atlantic-influenced climate of Galicia, where cool temperatures and moisture from the ocean moderate the growing season and preserve the grape's natural acidity.
Godello produces dry white wines with pronounced minerality and herbal aromatics. The wines typically display citrus notes—lemon and grapefruit are common—alongside stone fruit and sometimes floral or grassy characteristics. The acidity is naturally high, giving the wines a crisp, angular structure with moderate alcohol levels. Body ranges from light to medium depending on vineyard site and winemaking choices. The mineral quality often reflects the slate and granite-rich soils where the grape grows best.
The grape is most closely associated with Ribeira Sacra and the Valdeorras denomination in Galicia, where it has become the principal white variety. Its acidity and mineral profile make Godello wines food-friendly partners for seafood, particularly shellfish and white fish, as well as lighter poultry dishes. The wines are typically consumed young to mid-term, though quality examples can age modestly.
