This is a savory, bold and structured wine, with a firm foundation. Hints of dried herbs, along with aromas of deep blackberry and black cherry, are evident along with mineral notes of crushed stone. The flavors are deeply concentrated with black plum, as well as fresh blackberries to match the nose. Freshness and acidity are followed by silky textures and refined, elegant tannins.

The Merlot is all from estate-grown fruit, with 87% coming from their Suscol Springs vineyard and 13% from Cakebread Winery Ranch vineyard. It was aged for 17 months in 55% new French Oak. Deep garnet-purple, the nose comes bounding of the glass with notes of blueberry pie, baked plums, and chocolate box with hints of liquorice and spice box. Medium-bodied, the palate gives up intense blue and black fruit preserves flavours with a wicked backbone of freshness and light grip of chewy tannins, finishing long and spicy.

Cakebread Cellars has turned in an attractive 2013 Merlot (95% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) that shows nice bluish/plum color to the rim, sweet blue and black fruits, good acidity, a fresh, medium-bodied mouthfeel, excellent concentration and an endearing and charming finish. The wine is slightly compact, which keeps it from getting higher ratings, but it’s well-made.
