Maker's Mark is an American whiskey distillery located in Loretto, Kentucky, established in 1953 by Bill Samuels Sr. The distillery produces bourbon whiskey using a distinctive mash bill that substitutes wheat for the traditional rye grain, creating a softer, sweeter flavor profile than typical bourbon. The facility operates as a working distillery on a historic site that was designated a National Historic Landmark.
Kentucky's climate and limestone-filtered water contribute significantly to bourbon production, with temperature fluctuations causing the whiskey to expand and contract within charred oak barrels, extracting color and flavor compounds. Maker's Mark follows traditional bourbon-making methods, including hand-dipping each bottle in their signature red wax seal. The wheat-forward mash bill, combined with Kentucky's environmental conditions, produces bourbon with characteristic vanilla and caramel notes alongside a smoother mouthfeel compared to high-rye bourbons.
The distillery's core expression maintains consistency through careful barrel selection and blending, typically aged for around six years until the master distiller determines optimal flavor development rather than adhering to a strict age statement. This approach reflects the Kentucky bourbon tradition of prioritizing taste over predetermined aging periods.
